NCIL

A Message from the Executive Director:

Autumn has just begun and it is already a busy time at NCIL. Across the nation, the Independent Living Movement is pushing some important legislative initiatives that are beginning to move in congress. The next year will be a critical time for advocates to demonstrate widespread support and the necessity of legislation such as the Community Choice Act and the ADA Restoration Act, which will reaffirm the standing of the ADA. We must present a united front to Congress as they debate disability rights issues. We need every advocate in order to be successful.

We are pleased to announce that NCIL will be continuing work on the IL Net grant, which allows us to present national onsite trainings, teleconferences, and webcasts on issues of importance to the independent living community. We are very happy to once again be working with ILRU (Independent Living Research Utilization), APRIL (Association of Programs for Rural Independent Living), and the many other talented individuals and organizations participating in this project.

The 2008 Membership Drive is just beginning! Please remember to submit your renewal application by January 31st to ensure you do not experience a lapse in your benefits. And if you are not a NCIL member, please sign up today! There is a 25% discount for new CIL and SILC members.

NCIL members receive information via the Weekly Advocacy Monitor (WhAM!) and our Action Alert e-mail system, which give advocates the timely and specific information they need to act quickly and effect change on the issues that matter to us most. And, now through a partnership with the Independent Living Center of the Hudson Valley (ILCHV), members receive a new publication, Independence Today, which provides in-depth examination of issues important to the whole community, written by writers with disabilities for people with disabilities. You can find out about these member benefits and more at www.ncil.org. I hope you’ll join us and help lead the Independent Living Movement forward! John Lancaster
