From the Editor...Marca Bristo is the subject of our cover story. Like others, Marca is not only a leader in the Independent Living Movement in the U.S. but on the international scene as well. Marca was also one of the founding members of the National Council on Independent Living and its second president. Earlier this year, she achieved one of her personal goals: a state-of-the-art building that houses her CIL. Access Livings four-story, glass-face building along the Chicago Avenue skyline is one of the first ever to incorporate both universal and green design. The goal is to use Access Living as a cultural center to display the works of artists with disabilities and host lectures, performances and conferences. The buildings bottom line: empowering others. Congratulations to Marca and her board. When the history of the Disability Rights Movement is written, James J. Weisman will have a chapter all for himself. A non-disabled attorney, Weisman is one of those people who understands the politics of disability and its injustices. A witty, funny and brilliant attorney, Weisman was the man who chipped away at the transportation establishment until it cracked. Like his co-worker and friend Terry Moakley, James Weisman is one of those often-overlooked heroes. It is my pleasure to bring you Kathi Wolfes piece on someone everyone should know: a friend and one of my heroes. The NCIL section brings more responses from presidential primary candidates, an excellent piece on the Community Choice Act and testimony on the ADA Restoration Act of 2007 a very good read on the status of two important pieces of legislation and the race for the White House. This issue includes an article by Janine Bertram Kemp titled Candidate with a Disability Running on His Ideas. Mike Ervin has a report on National ADAPT Takes Action in Chicago, Brenda Brown-Grooms writes on Accessible Medical Equipment a Real Reach and Amy Halloran expounds on Accident Survivors Drive Home Their Point About Safety. We have two commentaries, one by Susan Cohen and the other by a newcomer to our paper, Cathy Owen of Wyoming. Cohens piece, Disability Community Voting-Access Ideas Finally Registering, is a lesson on how advocates in New York state took on the board of elections. Owens submission is In Rural West, Fight for Independence Not Over Yet. As usual, we have our two columns: This Day in Disability History by Mike Reynolds and For Directors Only by yours truly. On the Web version of our paper, check out the News Summary by Dave Reynolds from Inclusion Daily Express and the Calendar of Events by Stephen Mahoney. We invite you to send us notices of conferences, rallies and other items of interest. We also welcome op-eds, commentaries and editorials. Till the next issue: Keep on writing. Pat Figueroa, Jr. |
