CIL / ADRC CollaborationNCIL is working with the Agency on Aging to lead a national discussion on how CILs and Aging and Disability Resource Centers (ADRCs) can effectively collaborate. Additionally, NCIL has established an ADRC taskforce to investigate and suggest next steps for such efforts. The ADRC program is a joint project of the Agency on Aging and the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid (both HHS agencies). ADRC grants are intended to help states provide one-stop resource centers for all older adults and people with disabilities wanting to learn about and secure long-term care and related services. The current level of CIL involvement in ADRCs varies widely; some CILs have been awarded ADRC grants, ensuring disability community participation, but many who are not involved worry that the independent living philosophy is not being adequately acknowledged or studied when grants are awarded to agencies used to providing case management. Local ADRCs need the participation of the disability community in this crucial formative stage and we hope CILs will take advantage of this unique opportunity to win ADRC grants. As a nation, we are moving toward a system that will provide long-term care options regardless of classification of disability. NCIL supports a long-term care system that works for everyone and it is our sincerest hope that Centers for Independent Living and ADRCs will educate and empower all people seeking long-term care services to seek the services they so desperately need in their homes and communities.
