From the Editor….

First of all, I would like to thank all those people who have sent us e-mails, and have called me to express how much they like and appreciate the Independence Today. It’s a great feeling to hear over and over again that “It’s a great publication,” and “It’s about time we had something like this that covers all disabilities.” Bringing us all together as one cohesive community is one of our goals. One community united for progress.

In this issue we welcome a few other nationally recognized writers and advocates such as Janine Bertram-Kemp. Another nationally known writer and advocate, Penny Reeder, joins us with a piece on the Individualized Education Program (IEP), from a parent with a disability perspective. She also provides us with an Op. Ed. Titled No Access Means No Freedom, on the recent decision by the Bush Administration to appeal a court decision on making dollar bills more accessible to people with blindness. Norman Smith with some insight on preparing for Winter emergencies. Brenda Brown-Grooms, is an Independent Living Coordinator with the Blue Ridge Independent Living Center in Roanoke, writes on Elder Care. A newcomer named Kim Hudson provides a look at The Health Insurance Safety Net Today.

In this issue we have a second column named For Directors Only. This feature will cover issues surrounding managing a CIL, or not-for-profit organization.Ronald B. House, Ph.D., an experienced IL management trainer, and currently is the CEOand executive vice president of the American Disabilities Institute for Research and Training, Inc.

Leslie Underwood’s second installment in Getting Clean from Old Attitudes is a private and personal account of experience in substance-abuse treatment programs. Our news roundup is provided by Dave Reynolds from Inclusion Daily Express. This roundup provides selected news items for the last two months. The complete document may be viewed at the Independence Today Web site, www.itodaynews.com.

Finally, Part III of my cryptic commentary on how the service-delivery system evolved from voluntary agencies to Centers for Independent Living will not appear in this issue due to space limitations.

A special thanks to all the directors of CILs, state councils on independent living, associations, governmental agencies, and agencies serving the aging population for their assistance in distributing this publication. We encourage, and welcome, your support so that we can make this publication community owned.
