From the Editor .In this issue of Independence Today we welcome a few new contributors, writers and advocates such as Lori Stewart and Rick Fitzgerald. We conclude Penny Reeders series on the Individualized Education Program (IEP) from the perspective of a parent with a disability. The cover story by Kathi Wolfe, another nationally known writer, is on the situation at Gallaudet University. She interviews the interim president of Gallaudet,Robert Davila. Another great piece is an interview of a disabled Iraq War veteran, Health Calhoun, by Brenda Brown-Grooms. On the benefit front, Eleanor Canter provides a historical look at a national problem, estate recovery for Medicaid. This is a must-read article if you dont have long-term care insurance or if you own your home. Ronald B. House, Ph.D., provides another installment of the column we named For Directors Only. This feature covers issues surrounding managing a CIL or not-for-profit organization. This months theme: board governance. The News Briefs roundup is available only on the Web site, as is the calendar of events this month. These features may be viewed at the Independence Today Web site, www.itodaynews.com. Finally, we have Part III of my commentary on how the service-delivery system evolved from voluntary agencies to centers for independent living A special thanks to all the people who make this possible: the writers; the editors, Mike and Roberta; and the staff of ILCHV, Inc. As always, we express our appreciation to all CILs for helping in the distribution of this publication. Patricio Pat Figueroa, Jr. Publisher/ Editor |
