NCILMessage from the Executive Director:Dear Advocates and Friends, Two thousand seven has come and gone and two thousand eight stands before us with a beckoning hopefulness. In this issue, we will explore some of our communitys biggest accomplishments of this past year, including the momentum beginning to materialize around the Community Choice Act, ADA Restoration, and the coming elections. NCIL content from this issue will also focus on some of the major issues we will face in the coming year, including the security of independent living funding and our place in the national dialogue on the advancement of technology. Two thousand seven was NCILs most successful year to date! We celebrated our 25th Anniversary at our largest ever Annual Conference, educated hundreds of independent living employees through IL Net trainings, established partnerships between the aging and IL communities, and increased NCIL membership to record levels. Two thousand eight promises to rival the previous year, and the Independent Living Movement grows stronger by the day. The conclusion of this year is in part welcome, as many of our brethren remain unjustly detained in nursing homes, institutions, and inaccessible communities. With the new year already underway, it is my hope that you will join us in celebration of what is to come, by leaving a footprint in the freshly fallen snow, a step toward the day when we will truly live freely as one people. It is my greatest hope that you will join us in our efforts for 2008. NCIL is a member-controlled organization, and your participation is critical to the success of our efforts. If your Center or Statewide Independent Living Council is already a member, dont forget that you can increase your impact by also becoming an individual member! Individual members may serve on subcommittees to enact significant change at the national level and guide NCIL and the independent living community into the future through direct leadership. For more information on the National Council on Independent Living and our membership benefits, please visit www.ncil.org. Sincerely, John Lancaster |
