From the Editor .The underlining theme of this issue of Independence Today is friends and acquaintances. Amy Halloran has A Chat with Anne Finger, whom she met at a writers conference; Janine Bertram Kemp writes a personalized account of her friend, Linda Martinez de Pedro in a story titled Advocate Fighting Lonely Battle for Survival; and another friend and newcomer, Dana Cacchione, provides a firsthand account about discovering your child has Aspergers in Aspergers Disorder: A Mothers Perspective. We welcome a new contributor, writer and advocate, David T. Williams. His contribution is New Policy a Threat to Equal Access about how the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS), a federal government agency, has promulgated regulations that may force many people with disabilities back inside the home. This issue marks the premiere of a new column, This Day in Disability History, which highlights major disability-related events that occurred in April and May. Mike Reynolds returns with this column, which we hope to make permanent feature. Mike Ervins cover story (Doctors: Whose Side Are They On?) is more than a rhetorical question as disability advocates become alarmed with recent positions, practices, policies and procedures being followed by the medical profession, such as those brought to national attention by the Ashley X case in Washington state. On the safety front, Earthquake Preparedness Tips for People with Disabilities by Kim Hudson focuses attention on the ever-present possibility of having to be evacuated or forcibly displaced by a disaster. The fourth and final installment of the Evolution of the Services delivery system compares voluntary agencies and CILs. Thanks to all who have written and asked questions. Another fine piece by Janine Bertram Kemp, Road to Freedom Tour a Journey of Awareness, describes the Road to Freedom bus tour, a yearlong campaign to increase awareness of the Americans with Disabilities Act. Ronald B. House, Ph.D., provides another installment of the column we named For Directors Only. In this issue, Tips on Working with Your Board: Recruiting Board Members. Finally, we would like to urge you to make arrangements to attend this years conference of the National Council on Independent Living (NCIL) in Washington, D.C., from July 9th to July 12th, 2007. NCIL turns 25 years old this July. Please note the ad on the last page on the NCIL raffle in which you can win a 2007 Corvette. A special thank you goes to Tom Olin for providing us with some photographs for this publication. And thanks to all the people who make this possible. We look forward to your feedback and participation. Patricio
